The question that started our story
From Everyday Practice to Global Awareness
Our company’s story began with a simple but powerful question: Could a clinician’s choice of everyday medical devices help both people and our planet?
As a physician, I realized that clinicians were contributing tons of environmental plastic pollution each year in the form of otoscope specula that can take centuries to decompose.
My partner, a multitalented maker, understood how materials science and product innovation could solve this global problem.
Together, we realized that eco-conscious change was not only necessary, but possible in a straightforward way.
When Our Mission Was Born
That is when our mission was born: to replace the “immortal”, petrochemical-derived plastics of conventional otoscope specula with a bio-composite material formulated to show faster breakdown in a landfill setting.
By merging medical experience with technological innovation, we have created specula whose alternative material protects patients, supports healthcare professionals, and has the potential to dramatically reduce persistent plastic waste in the environment.
Using our product, each patient’s otoscope exam can now be a step toward a cleaner, greener future. This small change in the practice of medical care could have a huge impact on our planet.

From Idea to EcoSpec

We set out on a journey guided by a simple question: Can medical care be safer not only for patients, but for the planet too? We spent that year studying materials, exploring natural processes, and learning how the environment repairs itself. Every test, every prototype, and every failure taught us something new. Nature became our teacher—showing us how strength and sustainability can coexist. From that inspiration, EcoSpec was born: a vision to create a disposable medical product that doesn’t end as waste, but returns to the earth the way nature intended.

In 2024, our research turned into discovery. After countless trials, laboratory tests, and moments of doubt, we finally identified the natural-based materials that could bring EcoSpec to life. Materials that were strong enough for medical use, yet gentle enough to return to the earth without harm. This was the year we committed—fully and confidently—to transforming these materials into a real medical product. We began testing, refining, and challenging every detail, determined to ensure that EcoSpec would meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and biodegradability. 2024 was the year when EcoSpec stopped being an idea, and started becoming a promise.

By 2025, everything we had learned came together. Our materials were defined, our process refined, and our purpose clearer than ever. This was the year we moved from development to creation—when the first EcoSpec units came off the production line. Holding the final product in our hands was more than a milestone; it was a moment of pride. EcoSpec represented years of research, discipline, and belief that medical devices can—and should—respect the world we live in. Today, we are proud to present EcoSpec: a biodegradable, nature-inspired speculum designed to support healthcare professionals while helping protect the planet. What began as a dream is now a sustainable solution ready to make a difference.
